New features in this release:

  • Full support for Visual Studio 2010 RTM
  • .NET 4 support – You can now build your Windows Azure web apps and services using either .NET 3.5 or the new .NET 4.0 platform.
  • Cloud Storage Explorer: browse the tables and blobs in your Windows Azure account from within VS
  • Built-in Deployment: deploy your project to the Windows Azure cloud from within VS, with detailed status info every step of the way
  • Service monitoring: monitor the status of your services in the cloud using the new ‘compute’ node in VS Server Explorer
  • IntelliTrace support for debugging cloud service activity, with automatic log retrieval.  Requires VS 2010 Ultimate and .NET 4.0

We of course also rolled out a major update of the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio in the same push. Jim Nakashima and others will be showing our latest tools at PDC09 this week.

Windows Azure Tools also received coverage on Soma’s blog – woot!  Soma is Senior Vice President, Developer Division, and my nth degree boss’s boss.

While Jim is out working hard at PDC, back at the ranch we’re taking advantage of the calm following the PDC prep and product release storm to get a head start on the next round of features for Windows Azure Tools.

I can’t begin to describe all the stuff that is new and improved in this beta 2, so check out the official site for all the details.

Note that MSDN gets a major facelift as part of this rollout as well.

Issue: Visual Studio closes unexpectedly when launching Help: About or when creating or opening a Live Mesh project in some non-ENU operating systems.

Workaround: Modify or add the following registry key to a value of “False”:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Cloud Computing Tools\Update Notification\AutomaticUpdatesEnabled=”False”

This will resolve the issue so that you can get back to exploring the new tools in VS.

  1. You can now run the local client for mesh.com side by side with the local client for developer.mesh-ctp.com.
  2. Support for Windows 7 and IE8
  3. Single install for the Live Framework SDK and VS Tools – no more chasing down multiple bits and pieces to install in the right order!
  4. Continuing on that “chasing down bits” theme, auto update introduced in the January CTP release will bring this new release to you.  If you enabled auto update in the January CTP release, it should notify you now (in the next 24 hours or so) that the April CTP is available and give you a link to click on to get the update.

I say, this whole thing is beginning to feel downright civilized.  Wouldn’t you agree?
